Sleep Apnea

SERVING LACONIA, CONCORD AND THE LAKES REGION OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

When people stop breathing during sleep due to a blockage in their airway, their brain sends a message that leads to sudden and uncomfortable movement. This condition is known as sleep apnea. Most people suffer from sleep apnea without realizing it. Sleep apnea often manifests itself in the form of snoring, which comes off as bothersome to loved ones. However, snoring may be an indicator of something more amiss. Without treatment, sleep apnea can lead to permanent health problems or even death. Fortunately, there are solutions to sleep apnea and Dr. Patel is trained in the most advanced treatment options.

Causes and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
If you suspect that you may have sleep apnea, you are not alone. Millions of people have sleep apnea. However, many of these people do not realize that sleep apnea can be treated. If you have any of these side effects, please reach out to Dr. Patel as soon as possible:

  • Periods of sudden lack of breath during the night
  • Difficulty staying asleep during the night
  • Difficulty staying awake during the day
  • Snoring
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches

Sleep Apnea Diagnosis
Often, the best way to determine if you have sleep apnea is to meet with Dr. Patel. Your initial consultation will begin with an oral history and examination to determine if the root of your sleep problems may be oral. If we believe that your sleep problems may be due to your jaw alignment, we can conduct a follow up sleep study in which your sleep movements and patterns are recorded. During the sleep study, a recording is taken of your breathing, blood oxygen levels, head movement and position, and airflow. Dr. Patel uses an interdisciplinary approach and works closely with Sleep Physicians at sleep clinics throughout New Hampshire. Our combined effort and skill will determine if you have sleep apnea and help you seek the best options for treatment.

Dental Solutions for Sleep Apnea
While medical solutions for sleep apnea are often met with success, they also have downsides. CPAP machines are large, bulky, uncomfortable and can interfere with natural sleep patterns. These reasons can make a person’s compliance with CPAP machines very difficult.  As a result, many patients are referred to Dr. Patel to seek a solution for their sleep apnea problems.

Our sleep apnea treatment is comprised of a custom made oral appliance. This device is fitted to your mouth to move your jaw forward in a comfortable position way so that your airway is clear and properly aligned. This appliance uses very little material and is made of multiple pieces, so natural movement can still occur.
