My Invisalign Aligner Does Not Fit — What Should I Do?

But what if you find that one of your aligners is not sliding onto your teeth like it should? There are a few possible explanations for that problem, and there are some potential solutions. Continue reading below to learn more about how you can handle the situation if your Invisalign aligner does not fit.

You Did Not Wear Your Previous Aligner Enough

Invisalign aligners only work when you are wearing them! Each tray needs to be on your teeth for as much time as possible in order for it to adequately move your teeth. Therefore, if you discover that your new aligner is not fitting at all, the first thing you should do is review your wear habits. Have you consistently worn your previous tray for 20 – 22 hours each day? If you missed some days or did not meet the daily wear recommendation, your teeth likely need more time.

To correct this, return to your last aligner and wear it for several additional days. Your dentist can guide you on exactly how much longer. Once your teeth have shifted sufficiently, try inserting the next aligner again. Do not try to rush the process, as patience will help prevent delays in your overall treatment.

Your Aligner Is New

When you switch to a new Invisalign tray, expect it to feel snug or even slightly uncomfortable at first. This is normal. The aligner is engineered to move your teeth incrementally, and the initial tightness means it is working.

Sometimes, you may notice that the new tray does not seem to fit all the way or there are small gaps between the aligner and your teeth. In these situations, orthodontic chewies can help. These small, soft cylinders are designed for you to bite down on. This helps seat the aligner more securely onto your teeth.

Your Aligner Is Defective or Damaged

On rare occasions, your aligner may not fit because it has a defect or has suffered damage. Manufacturing issues, though uncommon, can result in trays that do not match your dental arches accurately. In other cases, mishandling the aligner can cause warping, bending, or cracking.

Inspect your aligner before each use. Look for any visible cracks, irregular edges, or areas that appear misshapen. Damage may occur if the aligner is dropped, exposed to heat, or improperly stored. Even minor damage can affect the fit and comfort of your aligner.

If you notice any sign of a defect or if your aligner has become damaged, contact your dentist promptly. Your provider may ask you to send photos or bring the aligner in for examination. If necessary, you will receive a replacement tray to keep your treatment on track.

An Invisalign tray that does not fit can be frustrating! Strive to figure out what the cause of the problem is, and consult with your dentist to arrive at a workable solution.
