Some people have avoided dentists their entire life because of fear and anxiety. It prevents them from getting the treatment they need to keep their teeth healthy for a lifetime. “Sedation Dentistry allows us to give hope and comfort to patients who are highly anxious and fearful”, says Dr. Manisha Patel, whose Doctorate degree in Pharmacology makes her uniquely skilled at providing sedation dentistry.
If you are among the many people who feel anxious about dental treatment, let us know. At The Center for Contemporary Dentistry we do our very best to alleviate any anxiety our patients may experience. Sedation dentistry is one more way to make your dental visit a positive experience!
Oral conscious sedation is a type of anxiolysis, which essentially means that it helps you stay calm without hindering your ability to respond your environment and control your own body. If you opt for this type of sedation, you will take a pill shortly before your procedure begins. As it takes effect, you will begin to feel quite relaxed. Because the medication may linger in your system for quite some time, you must have a trusted individual ready to drive you to and from your appointment.
Nitrous oxide (also known as “laughing gas”) is a type of gas that we administer through a nasal mask. As you breathe it in, it produces a relaxed, somewhat giddy feeling. We can easily adjust your level of sedation throughout your procedure. After we complete your treatment and remove the mask, the effects of the nitrous oxide will wear off quickly enough that it will be safe for you to drive yourself home.
We are one of very few practices in our area that offers general anesthesia. However, we only use it in rare cases— such as when a patient requires very extensive treatment or suffers from severe anxiety. It is a very powerful form of sedation that causes loss of consciousness. We monitor patients closely when they are under general anesthesia to ensure their safety. General anesthesia’s aftereffects may make you feel somewhat groggy, so it is important that you have a friend or family member available to help you after your treatment.
Children are especially sensitive to new environments, which may make them fearful during their dental visits. Some young ones also have physical, mental, or emotional challenges that make it difficult for them to sit still. To help such children, we offer safe sedation, usually in the form of nitrous oxide. We will work closely with you as a parent or guardian to do everything possible to ensure your child has a positive experience in our office.
